Concerto for Double Bass and Chamber Orchestra
(1980)

Concerto for Double Bass and Chamber Orchestra is in three movements. My intention, while working within the historical tradition of concerto form, was to present the bassist with a virtuosic challenge in an orchestral setting which would provide diverse instrumental colors and allow the double bass—the largest, but certainly not the loudest in perception of the orchestral strings—to be heard as a solo voice. Structurally each movement makes prominent melodic and harmonic use of a single interval—half steps in the first movement, whole steps in the second and thirds in the last movement.
