Just a Minute…
The Short Music Project
Time is a game
played beautifully
by children.
—Heraclitus (translated by Brooks Haxton)
A lot of my music is relatively brief. This was especially true when I was a young composer, but my penchant for music that is concise and economical still holds. Over the years I have enjoyed “playing” in my studio to no particular end other than to create a short piece for my own amusement. Since I do think of these pieces as compositions, I do often try to polish them to some extent, and thus they appear here now as an ongoing project to explore the ways that a very brief composition can work the magic of music. There will also be some clips from longer concert performances where I am the bassist. For me these are the moments when time stops and the pleasures of play are deeply felt. I hope you enjoy the results.
